Conservation of the Augusto Montenegro ship model

leave a comment »

Becky Jackson’s slideshow focuses on the conservation of the Augusto Montenegro, one of Glasgow Museums’ ship models.

Becky says: “This week has been all about silver. The funnels and cowls on the Augusto Montenegro ship model are tarnished and in parts the silver plate has been cleaned. Luckily the parts unscrew which makes cleaning them a lot easer. The tarnish is removed with silver cleaner and where the silver plate has worn away it is re-silvered using silver chloride.”

The real Augusto Montenegro steamship shunted people and goods up and down the River Amazon for more than 30 years. You’ll be able to see the model for yourself, and find out more about the ship’s history, in the new Riverside Museum.
